About Zell am See & Kaprun

Zell am See sits on a gravel spit pushed out into the Zeller See, so the old town has water on three sides and the Kitzsteinhorn's snow closing the valley behind it. The lake promenade is the easy hour: the Esplanade runs from the Elisabethpark north along the shore past the grand hotel on its own small peninsula, with wooden jetties, rowing boats and water that turns properly turquoise in June. The lake is warm enough to swim in from late June to early September, mirror-still on autumn mornings, and in a cold winter it freezes hard enough for skaters and a marked path across to Thumersbach — though the ice is never a promise, so check before counting on it. In the town, the Vogtturm and the Romanesque tower of St. Hippolyt hold together the few narrow lanes of old Zell. Above it, the Schmittenhöhe at 1,965 metres is a ten-minute cable car from the edge of town and a completely different photograph: summit meadows, a small white church, and something like thirty three-thousanders along the horizon with the Grossglockner among them. Kaprun, seven kilometres south, adds the Kitzsteinhorn — glacier terrain at 3,029 metres, open all year, with a viewing platform and a gallery tunnelled through the rock — and, in summer only, the Kaprun high mountain reservoirs, where the dam wall at Mooserboden stands in a bowl of turquoise water, ice and grey rock.

Top Photo Spots in Zell am See

The most photogenic locations for your Zell am See & Kaprun photoshoot

The lake promenade and the Elisabethpark

The Esplanade along the Zeller See with wooden jetties, rowing boats and the old town on its promontory — turquoise water in summer, and in a hard winter an ice field you can walk on.

Best time: Before nine, when the lake is still glass; evening light lands on the far shore

The lake only freezes in a cold winter and the ice is never guaranteed — check the current state before planning an ice session. For the town lit by evening sun, shoot from the Thumersbach side rather than the promenade.

The Schmittenhöhe summit

A 1,965-metre grass summit ten cable-car minutes from town, with a small white chapel, the whole lake below and something like thirty three-thousanders along the horizon.

Best time: The last two hours of daylight; clear mornings before the Tauern cloud builds

The cable cars close for maintenance between the seasons and stop in high wind — check the day's operation. Take a layer: the summit runs about ten degrees colder than the promenade, and the wind is constant.

The Kitzsteinhorn glacier above Kaprun

Glacier terrain at just over three thousand metres, with a viewing platform on the ridge and a gallery tunnelled through the rock — the one place near Zell am See that has snow in August.

Best time: Early morning, before the summer cloud builds on the Tauern; the platform faces south

The lifts run all year but stop for wind and storm — check the day's operation and summit weather before setting out. Allow an hour each way from Kaprun, and remember that 3,000 metres is felt: keep the shoot short and warm.

The Mooserboden reservoir above Kaprun

Two dam walls holding a turquoise lake at 2,036 metres, ringed by ice and grey rock at the head of the Kapruner Tal — a summer road only, closed by snow the rest of the year.

Best time: Late morning to afternoon in summer; the basin holds up in hard light better than most

Access is seasonal — the shuttle bus and the inclined lift normally run from late May or June to mid-October and can close for snow at either end, so check before planning around it. Allow an hour each way from the Kesselfall Alpenhaus.

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance should we book a wedding photographer in Austria?

For peak dates — Saturdays from May to September, and September weekends in the wine regions — book six to twelve months ahead. The best-reviewed photographers usually sell out right after the venue does. Weekdays and the shoulder months are far more flexible, and three to four months is normally comfortable. A winter wedding in the mountains is its own calendar: the weeks around Christmas and New Year go early, February is easier. If your date is closer than that, do not assume it is hopeless — Photo Austria can check the entire vetted roster for one date at once. When comparing, ask to see a full wedding gallery rather than portfolio highlights; how someone handles a dim baroque church tells you more than their best ten frames.

How many hours of coverage do we need?

Work backwards from the moments you cannot lose. An intimate ceremony with dinner fits into four or five hours: preparations, vows, couple portraits at golden hour, the first speeches. A classic full day, from getting ready to the first dances, runs eight to ten. Two Austrian specifics matter here. In June the sun sets around nine in the evening, so couple portraits belong in that late window rather than straight after the ceremony. And the traditional late programme — the midnight snack, the stealing of the bride, the dancing that keeps going — happens long after many contracts end, so decide in advance whether you want it covered or are at peace with a set finishing time. Your photographer will recommend honest hours, not maximum hours.

Do photographers travel to any venue in Austria?

Yes, and they are used to it, because so many Austrian weddings happen an hour or two from the nearest city. Photographers are based in Vienna, Salzburg, Innsbruck, Graz and Linz and drive out to the Salzkammergut, the wine regions and the alpine valleys routinely; others live in those regions themselves. For remote venues, travel and accommodation are quoted transparently up front — for a Saturday wedding at a hut above Schladming or a lake hotel deep in the Salzkammergut, expect the photographer to arrive the evening before rather than gamble on a pass in bad weather, and that night appears in the quote. Mention the venue in your first message to Photo Austria and we will prioritise photographers already near it.

How much does a photoshoot in Zell am See cost?

Professional photoshoots in Zell am See and Kaprun start from €310. Packages differ by duration and the number of edited photos — an hour covers the lake promenade and the Elisabethpark, while the Schmittenhöhe, the Kitzsteinhorn glacier or the Mooserboden reservoir mean cable-car or mountain-road time and want the two-hour option. Cable-car and toll tickets are separate from the photography fee.

What are the best photo spots in Zell am See and Kaprun?

The lake promenade and the Elisabethpark are the classic frame, with the old town on its promontory and the Kitzsteinhorn's snow closing the valley behind. The Schmittenhöhe at 1,965 metres adds summit meadows, a small white church and about thirty three-thousanders along the horizon. Above Kaprun, the Kitzsteinhorn's viewing platform works all year, and in summer the dam wall at Mooserboden stands over turquoise water.

What is the best time of day and season for photos in Zell am See?

The lake takes morning light best: the water is stillest before nine and the Kitzsteinhorn stands clear across it. The Schmittenhöhe is an afternoon mountain, with the last two hours of daylight raking the summit meadows. June to September gives warm swimming water and green slopes, October is clear and empty, and from December the town is a ski resort — the lake sometimes freezes, but ice is never a promise.
