Family Photoshoot in Austria

It happens on most shoots and our photographers plan for it. The best family pictures never come from asking a child to pose; they come from play. Your photographer turns the session into a game — racing along the promenade at Zell am See, counting swans in Gmunden, throwing snow in a Tyrolean lane, hunting for the biggest pine cone in a Seefeld meadow. Meltdowns get waited out with a break and a slice of cake, and sessions are scheduled around naps and meals rather than against them. There is no wrong age; each one photographs differently. Pick a palette of two or three soft colours and let everyone wear them their own way — cream, sage, denim blue and warm sand look right against Austrian stone, water and meadow alike. Skip cartoon prints and big logos. Dress the children for playing, because the session involves running, climbing and sitting on grass or a jetty. Bring a change of clothes for the small ones; an Austrian lake is irresistible and a summer thunderstorm is common in the afternoon. In winter the coats and hats are the outfit, so choose ones you like — and add a warm layer underneath so nobody has to cut the session short. Of course, and your photographer will plan the route around whichever you bring. Some of Austria's best backdrops involve steps and cobbles — Hallstatt's lanes, Salzburg's old town, the climb to a castle — and for those a carrier is far easier than a pushchair. Genuinely pushchair-friendly favourites include the Schönbrunn park in Vienna, the promenades at Zell am See, the Achensee and the Wörthersee, the flat shore at Lake Neusiedl and the plateau paths around Seefeld. In winter, a sledge often replaces both.
