About Bad Gastein

Bad Gastein is the strangest town in the Austrian Alps and the most photogenic for it. The Gasteiner Ache arrives from the Hohe Tauern and drops roughly 340 metres in three steps straight through the centre, and because there was no flat ground the nineteenth-century spa was terraced into the rock on both sides of the gorge: hotel above hotel, each looking over the roof of the one below. Kaiser Wilhelm I came for the cure twenty times, Empress Elisabeth and half the Habsburg court followed, and the great houses they filled — the Straubinger, the Badeschloss beside the falls, the Grand Hotel de l'Europe of 1906 — still stack up over the Straubingerplatz. Several stood empty for decades; the Badeschloss lost its roof to arson in 2013 and reopened in December 2023, and restoration continues around the square, so the town is halfway between ruin and revival and looks like nowhere else. The water is the other half of the story: the springs run warm and mildly radioactive with radon, and they are why the town exists at all. Above it, the Stubnerkogel gondola climbs from the centre to 2,246 metres, a 140-metre suspension bridge and a view along the Hohe Tauern to the Goldberg glaciers. It is a genuine year-round place. In winter the gorge ices up in curtains, the ski area runs to Sportgastein and the lit façades against black rock are the strongest frame in the valley; in summer the falls are loudest with the May and June snowmelt, the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Promenade contours the slope above the roofs, and the Graukogel's larch forest turns in late September.

Top Photo Spots in Bad Gastein

The most photogenic locations for your Bad Gastein photoshoot

The Gasteiner Wasserfall and the Wasserfallbrücke

The Gasteiner Ache drops about 340 metres in three steps straight through the middle of the town, and a stone bridge of 1840 crosses it at the second one — the only Austrian waterfall with hotels standing on both sides of it.

Best time: Middle of the day for light on the water; bright overcast is better than hard sun

The fall is strongest with snowmelt in May and June and after rain — the flow is reduced by a power intake upstream. In winter the platforms ice up and sections of the Wasserfallweg can close; check before you go down.

The belle-époque façades above the gorge

The Straubinger, the Badeschloss and the Grand Hotel de l'Europe stacked on the ledges either side of the falls — a whole imperial spa town built vertically, and half of it only recently woken up.

Best time: Bright overcast for the stucco; blue hour for lit windows against the dark gorge

Restoration around the Straubingerplatz is ongoing and scaffolding moves — check which façades are clear before the day. Interiors are private; shoot from the bridge and the road switchbacks below it.

The Stubnerkogel suspension bridge

A 140-metre footbridge hung between two ridges at 2,246 metres, reached by gondola from the middle of town, with the Hohe Tauern and the ice of the Goldberg group filling the southern horizon.

Best time: Early on a clear morning for the Hohe Tauern; the last hour for warm light along the ridge

The bridge closes in high wind or storms, and the gondola pauses between seasons — check both the same morning. It sways; give anyone uneasy with heights the platform instead.

The Kaiser-Wilhelm-Promenade above the Ache

A level nineteenth-century cure path along the eastern slope, looking down on the stacked roofs and the gorge of the Gasteiner Ache, with the 1889 monument to the emperor who came twenty times.

Best time: Late afternoon, when the sun crosses onto the town and the path stays in soft shade

Walk it rather than standing still — fifteen minutes of path gives several different backgrounds. In winter check that it is cleared and take grips; icy sections and short closures after snow are normal.

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance should we book a wedding photographer in Austria?

For peak dates — Saturdays from May to September, and September weekends in the wine regions — book six to twelve months ahead. The best-reviewed photographers usually sell out right after the venue does. Weekdays and the shoulder months are far more flexible, and three to four months is normally comfortable. A winter wedding in the mountains is its own calendar: the weeks around Christmas and New Year go early, February is easier. If your date is closer than that, do not assume it is hopeless — Photo Austria can check the entire vetted roster for one date at once. When comparing, ask to see a full wedding gallery rather than portfolio highlights; how someone handles a dim baroque church tells you more than their best ten frames.

How many hours of coverage do we need?

Work backwards from the moments you cannot lose. An intimate ceremony with dinner fits into four or five hours: preparations, vows, couple portraits at golden hour, the first speeches. A classic full day, from getting ready to the first dances, runs eight to ten. Two Austrian specifics matter here. In June the sun sets around nine in the evening, so couple portraits belong in that late window rather than straight after the ceremony. And the traditional late programme — the midnight snack, the stealing of the bride, the dancing that keeps going — happens long after many contracts end, so decide in advance whether you want it covered or are at peace with a set finishing time. Your photographer will recommend honest hours, not maximum hours.

Do photographers travel to any venue in Austria?

Yes, and they are used to it, because so many Austrian weddings happen an hour or two from the nearest city. Photographers are based in Vienna, Salzburg, Innsbruck, Graz and Linz and drive out to the Salzkammergut, the wine regions and the alpine valleys routinely; others live in those regions themselves. For remote venues, travel and accommodation are quoted transparently up front — for a Saturday wedding at a hut above Schladming or a lake hotel deep in the Salzkammergut, expect the photographer to arrive the evening before rather than gamble on a pass in bad weather, and that night appears in the quote. Mention the venue in your first message to Photo Austria and we will prioritise photographers already near it.

How much does a photoshoot in Bad Gastein cost?

Professional photoshoots in Bad Gastein start from €310. Packages vary by duration and the number of edited photos — an hour around the waterfall and the Straubingerplatz façades, or two hours that add the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Promenade above the roofs. Most couples book 60 to 90 minutes. The Stubnerkogel needs the two-hour option, because the gondola alone takes about ten minutes in each direction.

What are the best photo spots in Bad Gastein?

The Wasserfallbrücke over the middle fall is the signature frame, with the Badeschloss on one side and the gorge below; the Wasserfallweg adds railed platforms beside all three steps. The Straubingerplatz gives the belle-époque façades stacked above each other. For height, the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Promenade looks down on the roofs, and the Stubnerkogel's 140-metre suspension bridge sits at 2,246 metres.

What is the best time of day and season for photos in Bad Gastein?

The gorge is narrow, so the sun reaches the water only around midday; late afternoon lights the far wall while the fall sits in shade, and blue hour turns the lit façades against black rock into the town's strongest frame. The waterfall is loudest with the May and June snowmelt. Larches on the Graukogel turn in late September, and the gorge ices up from January.
