Professional photoshoots in Schladming start from €279. Most couples book 60 to 90 minutes; a session on the Dachstein glacier means cable-car tickets and travel time, so it needs the two-hour option.

The Dachstein glacier is the dramatic one: the Skywalk balcony, the suspension bridge and the Stairway to Nothingness at about 2,700 metres, all within a few steps of the top station. The Planai summit gives open pasture and a horizon of rounded green ridges ten minutes above town. In the Untertal the Wilde Wasser path leads past the Riesach falls to the Riesachsee, and the old square keeps its painted houses and arcades.

Mornings are the safest bet on both summits: cloud usually builds over the Dachstein after midday and the glacier station can sit inside it by lunchtime. Late afternoon suits the town square and the Untertal, where the gorge stays in shade all day anyway. Roughly June to September the high paths are clear of snow and everything is green; from December this is a ski town with snow down to the valley.

Both are the whole plan and both close for maintenance between seasons, usually for some weeks in spring and again in autumn, so check the current operating dates and the last descent before booking a summit slot. It is often fifteen degrees colder and far windier at 2,700 metres than in town, the Skywalk shuts in storms, and the Untertal road above the valley car park is closed to cars.

For peak dates — Saturdays from May to September, and September weekends in the wine regions — book six to twelve months ahead. The best-reviewed photographers usually sell out right after the venue does. Weekdays and the shoulder months are far more flexible, and three to four months is normally comfortable. A winter wedding in the mountains is its own calendar: the weeks around Christmas and New Year go early, February is easier. When comparing, ask to see a full wedding gallery rather than portfolio highlights; how someone handles a dim baroque church tells you more than their best ten frames.

Work backwards from the moments you cannot lose. An intimate ceremony with dinner fits into four or five hours: preparations, vows, couple portraits at golden hour, the first speeches. A classic full day, from getting ready to the first dances, runs eight to ten. Two Austrian specifics matter here. In June the sun sets around nine in the evening, so couple portraits belong in that late window rather than straight after the ceremony. And the traditional late programme — the midnight snack, the stealing of the bride, the dancing that keeps going — happens long after many contracts end, so decide in advance whether you want it covered or are at peace with a set finishing time. Your photographer will recommend honest hours, not maximum hours.
