About Schladming & the Dachstein
Schladming sits at 745 metres in the upper Enns valley, with the limestone wall of the Dachstein closing the northern horizon and the grassy Niedere Tauern rising behind the town to the south. It is a working ski town — it held the alpine World Championships in 1982 and again in 2013 — and that gives a photographer something rare: two lifts that put you above 1,900 and 2,700 metres within twenty minutes of the valley floor, in any month of the year. The Dachstein-Südwandbahn climbs from Ramsau to the Hunerkogel at about 2,700 metres, where the Skywalk platform pushes its last four metres out over a 250-metre vertical drop, a suspension bridge runs up to 400 metres above the ground to the ice palace, and fourteen glass steps — the Stairway to Nothingness — hang off the end of it. Snow lies up there all year and on a clear day the view runs west to the Grossglockner. The Planai, Schladming's own mountain at 1,906 metres, is the gentler summit: a ten-minute gondola from the middle of town to open pasture and a horizon of rounded green ridges in summer, floodlit pistes in winter. Down in the Untertal, an hour on the Wilde Wasser path passes the Riesach falls and a bridge over the gorge to the Riesachsee, a glacier-cut lake at 1,338 metres with two alpine huts on its shore. The town itself is compact — an old square of painted houses and arcades under the parish church tower. Summer is green and full of walkers and bikers; from December Schladming is a ski town first, and the Planai lifts run late for the night races.

Top Photo Spots in Schladming
The most photogenic locations for your Schladming & the Dachstein photoshoot
The Riesachsee and the Riesach falls
An hour up a gorge of waterfalls, ladders and a hanging bridge to a glacier-cut lake at 1,338 metres with two alpine huts on its shore.
Best time: From mid-morning for light on the lake; May and June for the loudest falls, September for dry rock
Boots with grip — the walkways and rock stay wet all day. It is an hour up and an hour back from the car park, so budget half a day. The huts open only in the summer months; check before counting on one.
The Dachstein Skywalk and suspension bridge
A glass-floored balcony, Austria's highest suspension bridge and a stairway of glass steps, all at about 2,700 metres above the Dachstein's south face.
Best time: Morning, before cloud builds along the ridge; the glacier is white in every month, so any season works
Wear real layers and gloves even in July, and count on wind. The bridge and the ice palace cost extra on top of the cable car, and everything shuts in high wind — check conditions and the last descent before going up.
The Planai summit
Schladming's own mountain at 1,906 metres — a ten-minute gondola from the middle of town to open pasture and a wall of Dachstein limestone across the north.
Best time: Early morning for empty ground and clean air; late afternoon for the Dachstein wall turning pink to the north
The gondola leaves from the middle of town, so no drive is needed. Walk five minutes off the top station to lose the crowd. Check operating hours — for much of the year the lift stops well before sunset.
Schladming's old town square
A compact main square of painted houses and arcades under the parish church tower, with mountains closing the end of every side street.
Best time: The first hour after sunrise for an empty square, or the hour before sunset for warm light on the façades
Shoot the arcades from inside them — the columns frame a couple and keep the light even. Avoid midday, when the narrow square is half hard sun and half black shadow.
Frequently asked questions
Do we need a permit to elope in Austria?
It depends on the kind of ceremony. A symbolic ceremony — vows with a celebrant, or just with each other — needs no permit and can happen on a meadow, a lake shore or a mountain pass; most eloping couples choose this and handle the legal paperwork at home. A legally binding wedding in Austria takes place at a registry office, and Austria does allow non-residents to marry, but the documents (birth certificate, certificate of no impediment, certified translations) take weeks rather than days, so start early. Separately, some sites set their own rules for professional photography — palace gardens, abbeys and church interiors in particular — so ceremonies happen near them rather than inside. Your Photo Austria photographer will flag anything specific to the spot you choose.
How long does an elopement photography session last?
It scales with your day. The smallest version is 60 to 90 minutes covering the vows and a portrait walk, from €310, which suits couples keeping things spontaneous. Half-day coverage of three to four hours adds getting ready, the drive or the lift up, and an unhurried golden-hour session afterwards. A full day follows the whole story from morning coffee to a candlelit dinner. In Austria most couples land in the middle, because the mountain part of the day takes longer than people expect: a cable car, a short walk in, the ceremony, and then the light doing something extraordinary that nobody wants to leave. Describe the day and your photographer will recommend honest hours rather than maximum hours.
Can our photographer recommend ceremony locations?
Yes, and this is where a local photographer earns their fee twice. They know which alpine meadows are working pasture and which welcome a small ceremony, which shore at Gosau stays empty at sunrise, at what hour the sun leaves a north-facing valley, when the Grossglockner road opens after the winter, and which spot that looks perfect online sits fifty metres from a coach park. Tell them the feeling you want — vast and dramatic, soft and green, snow-quiet — and you will get concrete suggestions with photographs, timings and honest warnings about access and footwear. They can also introduce celebrants, florists and musicians they have worked with. Couples regularly tell us the location their photographer proposed beat the one they had found from home.
How much does a photoshoot in Schladming cost?
Professional photoshoots in Schladming start from €310. Packages vary by duration and the number of edited photos — one hour on the Planai or around the old square, or two hours that add the Riesachsee walk or the drive up to Ramsau. Most couples book 60 to 90 minutes; a session on the Dachstein glacier means cable-car tickets and travel time, so it needs the two-hour option.
What are the best photo spots in Schladming?
The Dachstein glacier is the dramatic one: the Skywalk balcony, the suspension bridge and the Stairway to Nothingness at about 2,700 metres, all within a few steps of the top station. The Planai summit gives open pasture and a horizon of rounded green ridges ten minutes above town. In the Untertal the Wilde Wasser path leads past the Riesach falls to the Riesachsee, and the old square keeps its painted houses and arcades.
What is the best time of day and season for photos in Schladming?
Mornings are the safest bet on both summits: cloud usually builds over the Dachstein after midday and the glacier station can sit inside it by lunchtime. Late afternoon suits the town square and the Untertal, where the gorge stays in shade all day anyway. Roughly June to September the high paths are clear of snow and everything is green; from December this is a ski town with snow down to the valley.
