About Achensee

The Achensee lies at 929 metres in a trench between the Karwendel and the Rofan, nine kilometres long and rarely more than a kilometre wide, which is why the first sight of it from the road above Maurach reads more like a fjord than an alpine lake. The water is cold, very clear and turns from deep blue to green depending on the light; the Karwendel side has almost no building on it at all. Pertisau is the one flat shore, a village of hotels and boat jetties on a green delta at the western bay, with the Karwendel rising straight out of the water behind it and a lakeside promenade that stays usable in any weather. Above the eastern shore the Rofan cable car climbs from Maurach to the Erfurter Hütte at 1,834 metres, where a short walk gives you the whole lake in one frame with the Karwendel opposite — the single best view of the destination, and reachable without a hike. The Gaisalm is the counterpoint: the only alpine hut in Tyrol you can reach by boat, tucked under cliffs halfway along the western shore, with a lakeside path to it from Pertisau. From May to October the Achenseebahn, a coal-fired cog railway built in 1889, still hauls its wooden carriages up from Jenbach to the lake. In summer this is a sailing and swimming lake with a strong afternoon wind; from December the shore villages turn to skiing and the lake stays open water while the ridges above go white.

Top Photo Spots in Achensee

The most photogenic locations for your Achensee photoshoot

The Pertisau lakeshore

The one flat green shore on the Achensee — a level promenade, wooden jetties and boat moorings, with the Karwendel rising straight out of the water behind.

Best time: Morning, when the light crosses the water and the far Karwendel wall is lit; the shore goes into shadow in the late afternoon

Walk out on one of the wooden jetties for a clean frame — from the promenade the moored boats crowd the foreground. The wind gets up around midday and kills the reflections until evening.

The Achensee steam cog railway

A coal-fired rack railway from 1889 that still pushes its wooden carriages up from Jenbach to the lake, one of the oldest working steam cog lines in Europe.

Best time: Early morning and the cooler shoulder months, when the steam plume is thickest; the line runs roughly May to October only

Pick a departure from the timetable and be in place ten minutes early — the train will not wait and there are only a few a day. Steam disappears in summer heat, so a cool morning is worth more than a sunny afternoon.

The Erfurter Hütte and the Rofan view

A cable car from Maurach to 1,834 metres, where a short walk puts the whole nine-kilometre lake below you with the Karwendel opposite.

Best time: Morning for light on the Karwendel wall and the clearest air; late afternoon is strongly backlit

Walk a few minutes past the hut to the open shoulder — from the terrace itself the railings and umbrellas are in every wide frame. It is often ten to fifteen degrees colder and much windier than the shore.

The Gaisalm

The only alpine hut in Tyrol reached by boat — a wooden alm under cliffs halfway along the roadless western shore, with a lakeside path in from Pertisau.

Best time: Morning, before the shore loses the sun; the cliffs above stay warm late in the day

Check the last boat back before you go out — the alternative is ninety minutes of narrow path in the dark. The path is rocky and partly exposed, so it is not the place for long dresses or smooth soles.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a photoshoot at the Achensee cost?

Professional photoshoots at the Achensee start from €279. Packages vary by duration and the number of edited photos — an hour on the Pertisau shore and its jetties, or two hours that add the Rofan cable car or the boat to the Gaisalm. Most couples book 60 to 90 minutes; the lift and the boat each eat enough time that they need the two-hour option.

What are the best photo spots at the Achensee?

Pertisau's flat green shore and its wooden jetties give the water with the Karwendel rising straight behind it. The Erfurter Hütte, ten minutes above Maurach in the Rofan cable car, is the one place that holds the whole nine-kilometre lake in a single frame. The Gaisalm under its cliffs is reached by boat or the shore path, and from spring to autumn the steam cog railway climbs from Jenbach.

What is the best time of day and season for photos at the Achensee?

Morning is the calm part of the day: the wind that makes this a sailing lake usually gets up around midday and holds until evening, so still reflections belong to the early hours. The Karwendel shore falls into shadow first in the afternoon while the Rofan side keeps its light longer. May to October is the green season, the colour strongest in June; from December the shore villages turn to skiing.

Are the steam railway, the boats and the Rofan cable car open all year?

No — all three of the things people come for are seasonal. The Achenseebahn steam cog railway runs roughly from May to October, the lake boats from spring into autumn, and the Rofan cable car pauses between the summer and winter seasons. The shore path to the Gaisalm is exposed and shuts in bad weather. Check the current operating dates for whichever of them a session depends on.

How far in advance should we book our engagement photoshoot?

For Vienna and Salzburg in May and June, for the Wachau during apricot blossom in April, and for the Advent weeks from late November, book four to eight weeks ahead — those are the dates that fill first. The rest of the year, two to three weeks is usually enough, and the mountains stay flexible outside the ski holidays. If you are combining the session with a venue-scouting trip, book as soon as the dates are fixed; the exact time and route can be settled later in the chat with your photographer. Short notice is still worth a try — Photo Austria can check the whole vetted roster for your date at once.

Can we use engagement photos for our save-the-dates?

Yes, and it is one of the main reasons couples book. You receive high-resolution files with personal usage rights, which covers printed cards, your wedding website, guest apps and social posts. Say up front that save-the-dates are the goal and your photographer will deliberately shoot wider frames with empty space for text, mix portrait and landscape orientations, and include a few images that still read at postcard size. The two of you small against the Hallstatt shore, or on a Wachau vineyard terrace with the Danube behind, makes an announcement people keep on the fridge. Delivery usually takes days rather than weeks, so the cards can go out quickly.
