The Gaisalm

The Gaisalm stands on a narrow ledge on the western shore, roughly halfway up the lake, under the cliffs of the Karwendel. There is no road to it. You either take one of the Achensee boats, which stop at its landing stage in season, or walk the shore path from Pertisau — about an hour and a half of narrow, rocky trail carved into the slope right above the water.

That isolation is the picture. The hut is an old wooden alm with a terrace, a jetty and a small clearing, and behind it the limestone goes straight up several hundred metres. There is no other building in view in either direction, which on a lake this well developed is worth the effort of getting there.

The shore faces east, so the sun leaves the hut early in the afternoon while the far side stays bright — plan for morning or accept a cool, even shade. Late in the day the cliffs above catch warm light long after the terrace has lost it.

The hut and the boats are seasonal, roughly spring to autumn, and the shore path is exposed, closes in bad weather and is not a place to hurry. In winter the western shore is left to itself. Check the boat timetable and the hut's opening before building a session around it; missing the last sailing means the long walk back.
