It happens on most shoots and our photographers plan for it. The best family pictures never come from asking a child to pose; they come from play. Your photographer turns the session into a game — racing along the promenade at Zell am See, counting swans in Gmunden, throwing snow in a Tyrolean lane, hunting for the biggest pine cone in a Seefeld meadow. Meltdowns get waited out with a break and a slice of cake, and sessions are scheduled around naps and meals rather than against them. A session that feels chaotic while it happens still produces the pictures you will keep, and usually better ones than a well-behaved hour would have.

There is no wrong age; each one photographs differently. Babies give quiet close-ups, toddlers give motion and comedy, school-age children love the adventure of a castle or a cable car, and teenagers relax the moment they realise nobody will make them pose. Three-generation sessions with grandparents are among the most treasured bookings we see, and Austria suits them because so much of the country is reachable without a hard walk — lake promenades, a funicular, a gondola, a level meadow. Pick a palette of two or three soft colours and let everyone wear them their own way — cream, sage, denim blue and warm sand look right against Austrian stone, water and meadow alike. Skip cartoon prints and big logos. Dress the children for playing, because the session involves running, climbing and sitting on grass or a jetty. Bring a change of clothes for the small ones; an Austrian lake is irresistible and a summer thunderstorm is common in the afternoon. In winter the coats and hats are the outfit, so choose ones you like — and add a warm layer underneath so nobody has to cut the session short. Professional photoshoots at the Wörthersee start from €310. Packages vary by duration and the number of edited photos — an hour on the Velden promenade or the Pörtschach peninsula, or two hours that link one of those with Maria Wörth. Most couples book 60 to 90 minutes; the lake is sixteen kilometres long, so a session that crosses from one shore to the other needs the two-hour option.

Maria Wörth is the picture of the lake: a small headland carrying two churches, with turquoise water on three sides and a cemetery terrace looking straight across. Velden's promenade of plane trees and jetties ends at the white castle, and Pörtschach pushes a wooded, rose-planted peninsula into the water with views both ways. Above the southern shore, the Pyramidenkogel tower holds the whole lake in one look.

Early morning gives the stillest water and the strongest turquoise, before the boats and the afternoon breeze work the surface. Maria Wörth is lit from the south-west, so it is at its best in the last two hours of daylight. July and August are hot, busy and the swimming season; late September and October are the photographer's months — the villas empty, the water stays warm and the colour is at its deepest.
