Rust is the set piece: painted burgher houses and arcaded courtyards around Rathausplatz, the fortified Fischerkirche and stork nests on the chimneys, with a causeway through the reeds out to the Seebad jetties. Mörbisch has its own causeway to the stage standing in the water. Podersdorf gives open water, a mole and a small red-and-white lighthouse, and behind Illmitz lie the flat reed lakes of the national park.

This is a sunset lake: nothing blocks the horizon, so the last hour runs long and the water often goes to glass once the afternoon wind drops. Sunrise on the eastern shore at Podersdorf works the same way in reverse. April to June brings storks, fresh reeds and migrating birds; September and October are warm and empty with the vintage on; and a hard winter can freeze the lake solid.

Much of the shore and the Seewinkel pans sit inside a national park, where you keep to marked paths and tracks, stay away from nesting birds and where drones are restricted — check the current rules before planning around them. The Rust Seebad and the Mörbisch stage are at the end of long reed causeways with paid parking in season, and the lake is fully exposed, so check the wind forecast.
