About Zillertal & Mayrhofen
The Zillertal runs south from the Inn valley for about thirty flat kilometres and then splits into four steep side valleys, and Mayrhofen sits exactly at the fork. The village itself is Tyrolean rather than pretty-postcard: painted inns and balconied houses along the Hauptstraße, the Ziller running clear through the middle, and mountains closing both ends of the street. Two cable cars leave from the village — the Penkenbahn to the west and the Ahornbahn to the east, which carries the largest cabins in Austria up to the Ahorn plateau at about 1,950 metres, a broad open shoulder with benches, a lake and the Zillertal Alps facing you. Thirty kilometres south, at the head of the Zamser Grund, the Schlegeis reservoir holds an unreal turquoise under the Hochfeiler and a line of glaciers. The road up is a toll road with narrow tunnels and is open roughly from late May or June to October; it is closed and unploughed in winter, so check before driving. The classic frame is from the path towards the Olpererhütte, about an hour and a half up from the dam. The other end of the valley is the Hintertux glacier, at the top of the Tuxertal, and it is the one place in Austria that runs 365 days a year — lifts to 3,250 metres in August as in February, ice caves inside the glacier, and snow on the ground when the valley below is green. Summer is meadows, cattle and long light on the Ahorn; winter is a full ski valley with snow down to Mayrhofen from around December to April.

The most photogenic locations for your Zillertal & Mayrhofen photoshoot
Mayrhofen village and the Ziller
Painted inns and balconied houses along one long street, with the Ziller running clear through the middle and mountains closing both ends of the view.
Best time: Morning light down the valley; the village floor loses the sun early in the afternoon
Do the village before the cable cars — the valley floor goes into shade while the plateau above is still lit. Balcony flowers are at their best from late June to September; in winter the same street is a working ski resort.
The Schlegeis reservoir
An unreal turquoise lake at 1,782 metres at the head of the Zamser Grund, held by a curved dam wall with the Hochfeiler and a line of glaciers behind it.
Best time: Morning for clear air over the glaciers; the road is open roughly late May or June to October only
Allow three hours return for the Olpererhütte path and start early — the suspension bridge queues from mid-morning in summer. The access road is tolled, has narrow tunnels and is shut all winter, so check before driving.
The Hintertux glacier
The one place in Austria where the lifts run every day of the year — snow at 3,250 metres in August, ice caves inside the glacier, and a green valley below.
Best time: Early or late for side light on the snowfield; midday flattens it. Open every month of the year
Allow most of an hour each way for the lifts, and take sunglasses, sunscreen and warm layers even in July. Lift hours, glacier access and the ice palace all change with conditions — check them on the day.
The Ahornbahn and the Ahorn plateau
Austria's largest cable car cabins lift straight out of Mayrhofen to a broad open shoulder at about 1,950 metres, with the Zillertal Alps facing you across the valley.
Best time: Late afternoon, when the plateau is still lit and the valley below is not; early morning for clear air
Come up after the village, not before — this is where the light lasts. The lift pauses between the summer and winter seasons and its hours change year to year, so check the current operating dates.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a photoshoot in the Zillertal cost?
Professional photoshoots in the Zillertal start from €279. Packages vary by duration and the number of edited photos — an hour in Mayrhofen and along the Ziller, or two hours that add a cable car and a mountain viewpoint. Most couples book 60 to 90 minutes. The Schlegeis reservoir and the Hintertux glacier are both a drive away and need the longer option.
What are the best photo spots in the Zillertal?
The Schlegeis reservoir is the picture people come for: turquoise water under the Hochfeiler and a line of glaciers, best from the path towards the Olpererhütte. The Ahorn plateau above Mayrhofen is a broad open shoulder reached by cable car, and the Hintertux glacier gives snow and ice in any month. In the village, the Hauptstraße and the Ziller carry the Tyrolean detail.
What is the best time of day and season for photos in the Zillertal?
The valley is deep and north-south, so the floor loses the sun early in the afternoon while the Ahorn plateau above it stays lit for another hour. Mornings are clearest at the Schlegeis. June to September is the green season with the high roads open; December to April is a full ski valley with snow down to Mayrhofen; the Hintertux glacier works in both.
Is the road to the Schlegeis reservoir open all year?
No. The Schlegeis Alpenstraße above Ginzling is a toll road with narrow tunnels and it is seasonal, usually open from late May or June until October and closed and unploughed in winter. Buses run in season. The Hintertux glacier, by contrast, is reachable and running every month of the year. Check the current opening, toll and bus times before you set out.
I'm shy in front of the camera — will I look awkward?
This is the most common worry and it usually disappears within ten minutes. Our photographers direct movement rather than poses: walk towards me along the quay, look back over your shoulder, adjust your scarf, laugh at how silly that instruction sounds. Motion photographs as confidence. Nobody will ask you to gaze meaningfully into the lens unprompted. Timing helps too — an early slot means fewer onlookers, and Vienna's arcades or the back lanes of Salzburg feel private even in season. Read the reviews on any Photo Austria profile and you will keep seeing the same arc: I was so nervous, and these are the best photos anyone has taken of me.
How many photos will I receive?
Every photographer states the number of edited photos and the delivery time in their package on Photo Austria, so you know before you book rather than after. What is true across the board: each image in your gallery is individually edited for colour, light and skin tone, not a raw dump with a few good frames hidden inside, and a single hour produces real variety — wide frames that show where you are, walking shots, close portraits, and details you never noticed being taken. Delivery is a private online gallery you download at full resolution. Longer sessions produce proportionally more, because the setup time does not repeat.
