The Ahornbahn and the Ahorn plateau

The Ahornbahn leaves from the eastern edge of Mayrhofen and carries 160-person cabins — the largest in Austria — up to the Ahorn plateau in a few minutes. What waits at the top is not a summit but a shoulder: a wide, gently rolling terrace of grass and low pine at roughly 1,950 metres, with room to walk and a horizon in every direction.

That openness is what makes it useful. There is nothing to climb, the ground is easy, and the Zillertal Alps stand across the valley in full view, so a subject has a real mountain backdrop within ten minutes of stepping out of the cabin. A small lake and the path towards the Filzenkogel give foreground if you want more than sky.

The plateau faces west, so it keeps direct light for an hour or more after the valley floor below has gone into shade — the reason to do the village first and come up here afterwards. Early morning gives the clearest air and the emptiest terrace.

Summer is meadow and grazing cattle; from December the plateau is snow and a ski area, and the same open ground reads completely differently. Cable car hours and season change year to year and the lift pauses between seasons, so check the current operating dates before building a session around the ride.
