About Wörthersee
The Wörthersee is the warmest large lake in the Alps: sixteen kilometres of water west of Klagenfurt that reaches 26 degrees in high summer and holds a turquoise-green colour no other Austrian lake quite matches. The shore is a hundred and fifty years of summer architecture — turreted villas in their own gardens, boathouses on stilts, and hotel terraces built right down to the water. Velden closes the western end with its white castle, now a hotel, and a promenade of plane trees and jetties looking straight down the lake. Pörtschach, on the northern shore, pushes a wooded peninsula into the water with a rose-planted walk around it and open views in both directions. The picture everyone knows is Maria Wörth, where a small headland carries two churches — a Gothic pilgrimage church with a shingled spire above the water and a smaller Rosenkranzkirche below it — and the road curls round a cemetery that looks straight across the lake. Above the southern shore the Pyramidenkogel tower rises 100 metres out of the forest on a spiral of larch beams, and its open decks give the whole lake, Klagenfurt and the Karawanken on the Slovenian border in one look. Summer is the season here and the lake is busy from June to early September; from late September the water goes glassy, the villas empty and the colour is at its best, and in a cold winter the shallow eastern arm still freezes hard enough for skating.

Top Photo Spots in Wörthersee
The most photogenic locations for your Wörthersee photoshoot
The Pörtschach peninsula
A wooded spit reaching out from the northern shore, with a level walk right round it, rose beds and open lake views in both directions.
Best time: Sunrise on the eastern side, sunset from the western path; open shade under the trees through the day
The circuit gives you east and west from the same twenty-minute walk — plan both ends of the light in one place. Roses peak in June and again in September.
The Pyramidenkogel tower
A hundred-metre spiral of larch beams above the southern shore, whose open decks take in the whole lake, Klagenfurt and the Karawanken in one look.
Best time: Midday for the strongest lake colour, the first and last hours for the mountains; autumn for the clearest air
Wind on the open decks is constant — anything loose will move, so plan for it. Admission and hours are seasonal and it shuts in storms, so check before you drive up.
Maria Wörth on its peninsula
Two churches on a small wooded headland pushed out into the lake, turquoise water on three sides and a cemetery terrace looking straight across.
Best time: The last two hours of daylight for the spire and the water; early morning for mist and an empty shore road
The best frames are taken from off the headland, not on it — the shore road west of the village and the boat both give you the whole peninsula. Parking is tight in summer; go early or come by boat.
The Velden promenade and Schloss Velden
A white Renaissance castle at the western end of the lake, with a promenade of plane trees, jetties and boathouses looking straight down sixteen kilometres of water.
Best time: Sunrise and the first hours, when the light comes up the lake into the promenade; the front goes flat in the afternoon
Work east along the promenade away from the castle for jetties and boathouses without hotel signage in frame. The castle is a hotel: shoot the exterior and the park, and ask before going in.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a photoshoot at the Wörthersee cost?
Professional photoshoots at the Wörthersee start from €279. Packages vary by duration and the number of edited photos — an hour on the Velden promenade or the Pörtschach peninsula, or two hours that link one of those with Maria Wörth. Most couples book 60 to 90 minutes; the lake is sixteen kilometres long, so a session that crosses from one shore to the other needs the two-hour option.
What are the best photo spots at the Wörthersee?
Maria Wörth is the picture of the lake: a small headland carrying two churches, with turquoise water on three sides and a cemetery terrace looking straight across. Velden's promenade of plane trees and jetties ends at the white castle, and Pörtschach pushes a wooded, rose-planted peninsula into the water with views both ways. Above the southern shore, the Pyramidenkogel tower holds the whole lake in one look.
What is the best time of day and season for photos at the Wörthersee?
Early morning gives the stillest water and the strongest turquoise, before the boats and the afternoon breeze work the surface. Maria Wörth is lit from the south-west, so it is at its best in the last two hours of daylight. July and August are hot, busy and the swimming season; late September and October are the photographer's months — the villas empty, the water stays warm and the colour is at its deepest.
Is the shore public, and do we need a ticket for Maria Wörth or the Pyramidenkogel?
Much of the Wörthersee shore is private garden, hotel ground or fenced lido, so plan around the public stretches: the Velden and Pörtschach promenades, the Maria Wörth headland road and the public bathing areas. The churches at Maria Wörth are free to enter outside services; the Pyramidenkogel tower charges admission and has seasonal opening hours. Check the current hours and any conditions before the day.
I'm shy in front of the camera — will I look awkward?
This is the most common worry and it usually disappears within ten minutes. Our photographers direct movement rather than poses: walk towards me along the quay, look back over your shoulder, adjust your scarf, laugh at how silly that instruction sounds. Motion photographs as confidence. Nobody will ask you to gaze meaningfully into the lens unprompted. Timing helps too — an early slot means fewer onlookers, and Vienna's arcades or the back lanes of Salzburg feel private even in season. Read the reviews on any Photo Austria profile and you will keep seeing the same arc: I was so nervous, and these are the best photos anyone has taken of me.
How many photos will I receive?
Every photographer states the number of edited photos and the delivery time in their package on Photo Austria, so you know before you book rather than after. What is true across the board: each image in your gallery is individually edited for colour, light and skin tone, not a raw dump with a few good frames hidden inside, and a single hour produces real variety — wide frames that show where you are, walking shots, close portraits, and details you never noticed being taken. Delivery is a private online gallery you download at full resolution. Longer sessions produce proportionally more, because the setup time does not repeat.
