About Linz
Linz is the third city of Austria and the least museum-like of them: a Danube port that makes steel and, since the 1970s, digital art, and looks the part. Its centre is the Hauptplatz, at 13,000 square metres one of the largest enclosed squares in Europe, ringed by pastel baroque façades with the white marble Trinity Column standing in the middle of it and trams crossing the open stone. Two streets away the Danube runs through the city under the Nibelungenbrücke, with the promenade of the Donaulände on one bank and, on the other, two buildings that define the modern city: the Lentos art museum, a glass box that glows in colour at night, and the Ars Electronica Center, whose whole façade is an LED skin — from the bridge at dusk the pair of them and their reflection are the best-known frame in Upper Austria. Above everything is the Pöstlingberg, 539 metres, carrying a twin-towered pilgrimage basilica visible from most of the city; the Pöstlingbergbahn, one of the steepest adhesion railways in the world, has climbed to it from the Hauptplatz since 1898, and the terrace at the top looks over the whole Danube basin to the Alps on a clear morning. Linz works all year: the river and the terraces from May to September, the Ars Electronica festival in early September, and from late November a Christmas market on the Hauptplatz and a second one on the Pöstlingberg, with the basilica lit above the fog that often fills the valley in winter.

Best time: Morning for the clearest view over the city; autumn and winter fog days, when the basilica stands above the cloud
Take the tram up rather than driving — the ride is part of the picture and the road parking is well below the summit. Check the last departure down; the walk is about an hour.
The Ars Electronica riverfront
A glass building on the north bank of the Danube whose entire façade is an LED skin, changing colour over the water from dusk onwards.
Best time: The twenty-five minutes after sunset, while the sky still holds colour and the façade is lit
Shoot from the bridge or the far bank, not from under the building — you need the reflection. The façade is not lit every night and the show changes, so check before you build a session around it.
The Hauptplatz and the Trinity column

Best time: The first two hours after sunrise, the only time the square is empty; side light on the façades morning and evening
Trams cross the square every few minutes — position so one passing behind adds to the frame rather than ruining it. From late November the Christmas market covers the whole square.
The Danube promenade at the Donaulände
A wide green riverbank below the old town — lawns, plane trees and a sculpture park along the water, with river ships tied up and the Pöstlingberg above.
Best time: Early evening, with warm light on the Pöstlingberg and the river still bright; soft north-facing light most of the day
Work the lawn edge down by the quay for a clean water foreground — the paths higher up put railings and cyclists in the frame. Ten minutes' walk from the Hauptplatz, so pair the two.
