About Linz

Linz is the third city of Austria and the least museum-like of them: a Danube port that makes steel and, since the 1970s, digital art, and looks the part. Its centre is the Hauptplatz, at 13,000 square metres one of the largest enclosed squares in Europe, ringed by pastel baroque façades with the white marble Trinity Column standing in the middle of it and trams crossing the open stone. Two streets away the Danube runs through the city under the Nibelungenbrücke, with the promenade of the Donaulände on one bank and, on the other, two buildings that define the modern city: the Lentos art museum, a glass box that glows in colour at night, and the Ars Electronica Center, whose whole façade is an LED skin — from the bridge at dusk the pair of them and their reflection are the best-known frame in Upper Austria. Above everything is the Pöstlingberg, 539 metres, carrying a twin-towered pilgrimage basilica visible from most of the city; the Pöstlingbergbahn, one of the steepest adhesion railways in the world, has climbed to it from the Hauptplatz since 1898, and the terrace at the top looks over the whole Danube basin to the Alps on a clear morning. Linz works all year: the river and the terraces from May to September, the Ars Electronica festival in early September, and from late November a Christmas market on the Hauptplatz and a second one on the Pöstlingberg, with the basilica lit above the fog that often fills the valley in winter.

Top Photo Spots in Linz

The most photogenic locations for your Linz photoshoot

The Pöstlingberg basilica and its railway

A twin-towered pilgrimage church on a 539-metre hill above the city, reached by one of the steepest adhesion railways in the world.

Best time: Morning for the clearest view over the city; autumn and winter fog days, when the basilica stands above the cloud

Take the tram up rather than driving — the ride is part of the picture and the road parking is well below the summit. Check the last departure down; the walk is about an hour.

The Ars Electronica riverfront

A glass building on the north bank of the Danube whose entire façade is an LED skin, changing colour over the water from dusk onwards.

Best time: The twenty-five minutes after sunset, while the sky still holds colour and the façade is lit

Shoot from the bridge or the far bank, not from under the building — you need the reflection. The façade is not lit every night and the show changes, so check before you build a session around it.

The Hauptplatz and the Trinity column

Thirteen thousand square metres of open stone framed by pastel baroque façades, with a white marble column in the middle and trams crossing it.

Best time: The first two hours after sunrise, the only time the square is empty; side light on the façades morning and evening

Trams cross the square every few minutes — position so one passing behind adds to the frame rather than ruining it. From late November the Christmas market covers the whole square.

The Danube promenade at the Donaulände

A wide green riverbank below the old town — lawns, plane trees and a sculpture park along the water, with river ships tied up and the Pöstlingberg above.

Best time: Early evening, with warm light on the Pöstlingberg and the river still bright; soft north-facing light most of the day

Work the lawn edge down by the quay for a clean water foreground — the paths higher up put railings and cyclists in the frame. Ten minutes' walk from the Hauptplatz, so pair the two.

Frequently asked questions

Do we need a permit to elope in Austria?

It depends on the kind of ceremony. A symbolic ceremony — vows with a celebrant, or just with each other — needs no permit and can happen on a meadow, a lake shore or a mountain pass; most eloping couples choose this and handle the legal paperwork at home. A legally binding wedding in Austria takes place at a registry office, and Austria does allow non-residents to marry, but the documents (birth certificate, certificate of no impediment, certified translations) take weeks rather than days, so start early. Separately, some sites set their own rules for professional photography — palace gardens, abbeys and church interiors in particular — so ceremonies happen near them rather than inside. Your Photo Austria photographer will flag anything specific to the spot you choose.

How long does an elopement photography session last?

It scales with your day. The smallest version is 60 to 90 minutes covering the vows and a portrait walk, from €310, which suits couples keeping things spontaneous. Half-day coverage of three to four hours adds getting ready, the drive or the lift up, and an unhurried golden-hour session afterwards. A full day follows the whole story from morning coffee to a candlelit dinner. In Austria most couples land in the middle, because the mountain part of the day takes longer than people expect: a cable car, a short walk in, the ceremony, and then the light doing something extraordinary that nobody wants to leave. Describe the day and your photographer will recommend honest hours rather than maximum hours.

Can our photographer recommend ceremony locations?

Yes, and this is where a local photographer earns their fee twice. They know which alpine meadows are working pasture and which welcome a small ceremony, which shore at Gosau stays empty at sunrise, at what hour the sun leaves a north-facing valley, when the Grossglockner road opens after the winter, and which spot that looks perfect online sits fifty metres from a coach park. Tell them the feeling you want — vast and dramatic, soft and green, snow-quiet — and you will get concrete suggestions with photographs, timings and honest warnings about access and footwear. They can also introduce celebrants, florists and musicians they have worked with. Couples regularly tell us the location their photographer proposed beat the one they had found from home.

How much does a photoshoot in Linz cost?

Professional photoshoots in Linz start from €310. Packages vary by duration and the number of edited photos — an hour on the Hauptplatz and the Danube promenade, which are two streets apart, or two hours that add the Pöstlingberg. Most couples book 60 to 90 minutes; the Pöstlingbergbahn takes about twenty minutes each way from the Hauptplatz, so the hill needs the longer option.

What are the best photo spots in Linz?

The Hauptplatz is the set piece — 13,000 square metres of open stone, pastel baroque façades and the white Trinity Column in the middle. Two streets north the Danube gives the promenade, the Nibelungenbrücke and the Ars Electronica façade, which turns to colour at dusk. Above it all, the Pöstlingberg carries its twin-towered basilica and a terrace that sees the whole city, with the old tram climbing to it.

What is the best time of day and season for photos in Linz?

The Hauptplatz is emptiest in the first two hours after sunrise and its façades take that low light well; by mid-morning the trams and the market are in every frame. The riverfront belongs to dusk, when the Ars Electronica skin comes on. April to October is the terrace and river season; from late November the Christmas markets light the square and the Pöstlingberg, and winter fog often fills the valley below the basilica.
