About Graz
Graz is the easiest Austrian city to photograph in two hours, because almost everything sits inside one loop. The Schlossberg rises straight out of the old town, and the Uhrturm on its terrace — the sixteenth-century clock tower whose big hand tells the hours, not the minutes — looks out over a field of red tiles that has been UNESCO-listed since 1999. You get up by the Schlossbergbahn funicular, by the glass lift inside the rock, or on the 260 steps of the Kriegssteig; all three work year-round and the terrace itself is free. Down at the river the mood changes completely: the Kunsthaus, the blue biomorphic "Friendly Alien" of 2003, and the Murinsel, a steel shell moored in mid-current with a café inside it, give a modern counterpoint five minutes from the medieval lanes. In between are the courtyards — the Landhaus with three storeys of Lombard arcades around a vine-shaded well, free to walk into on weekdays; the painted house on Hauptplatz; the narrow Sporgasse climbing towards Schlossbergplatz. Twenty minutes west, Schloss Eggenberg sets a formal baroque garden and a deer park around a palace whose windows count out the days of the year, with peacocks on the lawns. Styria is the warm corner of Austria: summer evenings run long and the terraces fill, October turns the Schlossberg's beeches, and from late November the Advent markets light Hauptplatz, Franziskanerplatz and the hill itself.

The 16th-century clock tower on its bastion, and from the wall beside it the whole UNESCO field of red roofs — the one Graz frame everybody knows, four minutes above the old town.
Best time: The last two hours of daylight for the roofs; before nine for an empty terrace
Times and fares for the funicular and the rock lift change with the season — check the current ones. Shoot the tower first from the south-east terrace, then cross to the parapet for the city, so the sun is behind you both times.
The Kunsthaus and the Murinsel
A blue biomorphic museum on one bank and a steel island moored in the current in front of it — Graz's modern quarter-hour, five minutes from the medieval lanes.
Best time: Bright overcast, or the last hour of daylight; the Kunsthaus façade takes morning sun
The Murinsel closes now and then for maintenance or high water — check that it is open on the day. Shoot the island from the Mariahilferplatz bank for the Schlossberg behind it, and the Kunsthaus from the far side of the Erzherzog-Johann bridge.
The Landhaus courtyard

Best time: Any bright day — the arcades hold soft shade; midday and rain both work here
It is a parliament building, so the courtyard closes for events and its access rules change — check before the day. The first-floor gallery gives the receding-arch frame; the ground loggia gives the well.
Schloss Eggenberg and its gardens
A baroque palace built as a calendar, with a walled formal garden, an avenue of old limes and peacocks on the lawns — twenty minutes west of the old town.
Best time: Morning for the front court and the lime avenue; late afternoon for the garden side
The park is open daily but the state rooms are guided-tour only on a seasonal calendar — check hours and any tripod or production rules before the day. Keep some distance from the peacocks; they are used to people but not to being herded.
