About Kitzbühel
Kitzbühel was a silver and copper town long before it was a ski town, and the money from the mines is still standing: two parallel streets, the Vorderstadt and the Hinterstadt, lined with tall burgher houses painted apricot, green, ochre and dusty pink, closed at one end by the Jochberger gate arch and overlooked by the two churches on their terrace. It is a small old town — you can walk the whole of it in fifteen minutes — and it holds together as a backdrop in a way few alpine resorts do. Above it on the west side is the Hahnenkamm, a gondola ride of eight minutes from the edge of the centre, and the Streif that runs down it is the most feared downhill course in ski racing; the race weekend in the second half of January fills the whole valley, and for the rest of the year the summit is a quiet grass terrace with the Wilder Kaiser's limestone wall on the northern horizon. Facing it across the town, the Kitzbüheler Horn rises to 1,996 metres, with an alpine flower garden on its southwestern flank that is free to walk into and in bloom from roughly late May to early September. Two kilometres out, the Schwarzsee is a peat lake so dark it mirrors, and warm enough in July and August to be one of the best bathing lakes in Tyrol — and at the end of the day the Horn stands lit in the water. Kitzbühel works in both seasons: green meadows and long evenings from June to September, deep snow and painted façades under it from December to March.

Top Photo Spots in Kitzbühel
The most photogenic locations for your Kitzbühel photoshoot
The painted houses of the Vorderstadt
A curving pedestrian street of ochre, pink and green merchant houses under two church towers — the silver money of the 15th century still standing, and the one Kitzbühel frame that works in any weather.
Best time: Mid-morning once the sun clears the roofs, or the last hour of daylight; overcast works well
Avoid Hahnenkamm race week in January — the date shifts each year, so check it. Shoot uphill from the bend for the stacked façades, and duck into an arcaded courtyard when the midday light on the street goes hard.
The Hahnenkamm summit and the Streif start
Eight minutes by gondola from the edge of town to a grass or snow ridge at 1,665 metres, the Wilder Kaiser laid out to the north and the most feared start gate in ski racing under your feet.
Best time: First lifts for a clean Wilder Kaiser, or the last hour when the north wall turns pink
The gondola closes between seasons — usually part of April, May and November — so check what is running. In race week the Streif is fenced and off limits; the ridge above the start still works.
The Schwarzsee at sunset
A small dark moor lake two kilometres out of town with reeds, a wooden jetty and the Kitzbüheler Horn standing behind it — the warmest swimming water in Tyrol in July, a skating rink in January.
Best time: The last half hour of light for the copper water; misty September and October dawns
Shoot from the south-western shore so the Kitzbüheler Horn sits behind the reeds. Winter skating on the lake depends on the ice being released — check locally rather than assuming, and stay off it otherwise.
The Kitzbüheler Horn and its alpine flower garden
A 1,996-metre summit reached by toll road or gondola, with a hillside of several hundred alpine species below it and the Grossglockner on the southern horizon — a July and August place above all.
Best time: Morning in July and August — clean air to the Grossglockner and the flower beds at their best
Road, gondola and flower garden are seasonal, roughly late May to early October — check the current dates. Bring a warm layer; the summit runs about ten degrees colder than the town.
Frequently asked questions
How far in advance should we book our engagement photoshoot?
For Vienna and Salzburg in May and June, for the Wachau during apricot blossom in April, and for the Advent weeks from late November, book four to eight weeks ahead — those are the dates that fill first. The rest of the year, two to three weeks is usually enough, and the mountains stay flexible outside the ski holidays. If you are combining the session with a venue-scouting trip, book as soon as the dates are fixed; the exact time and route can be settled later in the chat with your photographer. Short notice is still worth a try — Photo Austria can check the whole vetted roster for your date at once.
Can we use engagement photos for our save-the-dates?
Yes, and it is one of the main reasons couples book. You receive high-resolution files with personal usage rights, which covers printed cards, your wedding website, guest apps and social posts. Say up front that save-the-dates are the goal and your photographer will deliberately shoot wider frames with empty space for text, mix portrait and landscape orientations, and include a few images that still read at postcard size. The two of you small against the Hallstatt shore, or on a Wachau vineyard terrace with the Danube behind, makes an announcement people keep on the fridge. Delivery usually takes days rather than weeks, so the cards can go out quickly.
What's the difference between an engagement and couples session?
In practice they are the same product: same length, same starting price of €310, same photographers. The difference is intent. An engagement session usually has deliverables behind it — save-the-dates, a wedding website, images that match the look of the wedding you are planning — so your photographer will shoot cleaner compositions, remember the ring, and sometimes echo your venue's colours. A couples session is looser and simply documents the trip and the two of you as you are. Say which one you mean when booking and the plan follows; plenty of couples honestly want both, and an hour and a half is usually enough to cover them.
How much does a photoshoot in Kitzbühel cost?
Professional photoshoots in Kitzbühel start from €310. Packages differ by duration and the number of edited photos — an hour covers the painted Vorderstadt and the churches above it, while adding the Hahnenkamm, the Schwarzsee or the Kitzbüheler Horn means gondola or driving time and wants the two-hour option. Lift tickets and the Horn toll road are separate from the photography fee.
What are the best photo spots in Kitzbühel?
The Vorderstadt and Hinterstadt are the signature frame — tall painted burgher houses, the Jochberger gate arch and the two church towers on their terrace above. The Hahnenkamm summit, eight gondola minutes from the centre, gives the Wilder Kaiser across the valley and the top of the Streif. The Schwarzsee mirrors the Kitzbüheler Horn at the end of the day, and the Horn's alpine flower garden is in bloom through the summer.
What is the best time of day and season for photos in Kitzbühel?
The old town streets run north to south, so they hold soft light most of the day and are best before ten, when the shops are still shuttered and the street is empty. The Schwarzsee is an evening lake, with the Horn lit across the water. June and July bring flower meadows and long light; September is clear and quiet; January and February give deep snow, though the race weekend in the second half of January fills the town completely.
