For peak dates — Saturdays from May to September, and September weekends in the wine regions — book six to twelve months ahead. The best-reviewed photographers usually sell out right after the venue does. Weekdays and the shoulder months are far more flexible, and three to four months is normally comfortable. A winter wedding in the mountains is its own calendar: the weeks around Christmas and New Year go early, February is easier. If your date is closer than that, do not assume it is hopeless — Photo Austria can check the entire vetted roster for one date at once. When comparing, ask to see a full wedding gallery rather than portfolio highlights; how someone handles a dim baroque church tells you more than their best ten frames.

Work backwards from the moments you cannot lose. An intimate ceremony with dinner fits into four or five hours: preparations, vows, couple portraits at golden hour, the first speeches. A classic full day, from getting ready to the first dances, runs eight to ten. Two Austrian specifics matter here. In June the sun sets around nine in the evening, so couple portraits belong in that late window rather than straight after the ceremony. And the traditional late programme — the midnight snack, the stealing of the bride, the dancing that keeps going — happens long after many contracts end, so decide in advance whether you want it covered or are at peace with a set finishing time. Your photographer will recommend honest hours, not maximum hours.

Yes, and they are used to it, because so many Austrian weddings happen an hour or two from the nearest city. Photographers are based in Vienna, Salzburg, Innsbruck, Graz and Linz and drive out to the Salzkammergut, the wine regions and the alpine valleys routinely; others live in those regions themselves. For remote venues, travel and accommodation are quoted transparently up front — for a Saturday wedding at a hut above Schladming or a lake hotel deep in the Salzkammergut, expect the photographer to arrive the evening before rather than gamble on a pass in bad weather, and that night appears in the quote. Professional photoshoots in Hallstatt start from €310. Packages vary by duration and the number of edited photos — one hour from the classic viewpoint through the Marktplatz to the boat pier, or two hours that add the Welterbeblick skywalk by funicular. Most couples book 60 to 90 minutes at sunrise; anything that includes the skywalk or a boat on the lake needs the two-hour option.

The classic viewpoint on Gosaumühlstraße at the north end of the village — church spire, stacked houses, lake — is the frame everyone comes for. Behind it, the Marktplatz gives pastel façades around the trinity column, and the boat pier beside the church shows the village from the water. Above, the Welterbeblick skywalk at the Rudolfsturm looks 360 metres down onto the roofs and along the whole lake.

Sunrise, without exception: the viewpoint is yours until about nine, the coaches arrive from ten and the village stays crowded until four, when the light returns with the evening. October gives larch gold on the slopes and morning mist on the lake; June to August are warm, bright and busiest; from December the roofs carry snow, the blue hour comes at half past four and the village is at its quietest.
