About The lake pier and the boathouses on the Seestraße
Get directionsHallstatt has no road bridge and no station of its own on the near shore: the trains stop across the lake and a small boat has met them since the nineteenth century, crossing in about ten minutes and tying up at the wooden landing by the Marktplatz. The pier itself is one of the best frames in the village — a few metres of planking pushing out into the water, the village rising behind and the Dachstein filling the far end of the lake.
On either side of it the old Seehütten stand on stilts over the shallows, timber boathouses with double doors opening straight onto the water, dark wood against the pale render of the houses above. The stretch of the Seestraße that links them is narrow, quiet at either end of the day, and level all the way, which makes it the easiest spot in Hallstatt for anyone who does not want the climb to the skywalk or the walk out to the north viewpoint.
The light is at its best when the boat is not the point: dawn gives glass-flat water and mist, and the hour before sunset lights the far shore while this side is already soft. Midday is hard on the water and full of arriving day-trippers. Swans work the shallows all year and will come to you, which is either a gift or a hazard.
In summer the boats run every hour or so and the pier is busy each time one lands; in winter the timetable thins right out and the landing is often empty for long stretches, with snow on the boathouse roofs. Sailing times are set by the season and by the trains — check them if you want a boat in the frame.

Time the frame between arrivals — the pier fills each time the ferry lands and empties two minutes later. Level and step-free from the Marktplatz, so it is the accessible choice.
