The classic viewpoint on Gosaumühlstraße at the north end of the village — church spire, stacked houses, lake — is the frame everyone comes for. Behind it, the Marktplatz gives pastel façades around the trinity column, and the boat pier beside the church shows the village from the water. Above, the Welterbeblick skywalk at the Rudolfsturm looks 360 metres down onto the roofs and along the whole lake.

Sunrise, without exception: the viewpoint is yours until about nine, the coaches arrive from ten and the village stays crowded until four, when the light returns with the evening. October gives larch gold on the slopes and morning mist on the lake; June to August are warm, bright and busiest; from December the roofs carry snow, the blue hour comes at half past four and the village is at its quietest.

The Salzbergbahn funicular leaves from the Lahn end of the village and reaches the Rudolfsturm and the skywalk in about three minutes; the walk up the Salzberg path takes around forty-five. The platform itself is free once you are up, though the salt-mine tour is ticketed. The funicular runs from spring to early January and pauses for several weeks in the depths of winter, and hours change with the season — check the timetable before booking a session up there.
