A couples session here changes completely with the month — alpine roses and a green mirror in June, gold larches and empty shores in October, snow on the lake with the Gosaukamm black above it from December.

About Gosau & the Gosausee

The Vorderer Gosausee lies about eight kilometres up the valley from Gosau village, at 933 metres, and the reason to come is what the water does on a calm morning: the Dachstein, its glacier and the grey towers of the Gosaukamm all stand a second time in the lake. The car park is at the northern end and the frame is thirty seconds away — one of the very few great alpine views in Austria that needs no walk at all. A flat path circles the lake in about an hour and keeps the reflection on your left the whole way round. Beyond the Vorderer Gosausee the valley climbs on. The Gosaulacke and then the Hinterer Gosausee lie an hour and two hours further in on a gravel track, greener, emptier, and closer under the glacier; the Hinterer Gosausee freezes hard in winter and is the quietest water in the region. Above the north shore, the Gosaukammbahn lifts to the Zwieselalm at about 1,475 metres — open in summer for the meadows and the ridge line, and in winter as part of the Dachstein West ski area; check the current season and hours, they differ between summer and winter and the lift closes between them. Summer is the mirror at dawn and alpine roses in June; October turns the larches gold and drops the crowds; and from December the lake sits under snow with the Gosaukamm black above it. The lake road is ploughed in winter, but check conditions and whether the upper car park is open.

The most photogenic locations for your Gosau & the Gosausee photoshoot

The Vorderer Gosausee and the Dachstein reflection

A green lake at 933 metres that holds the Dachstein, its glacier and the Gosaukamm towers upside down on a calm morning — and it is thirty seconds from the car park.

Best time: Early morning, before the valley wind starts and while the surface still holds the mountain

Parking at the lake is paid, and in July and August the car park fills by mid-morning. The reflection is gone once the wind starts, so treat the first two hours as the session and the lake circuit as the extra.

The Gosaukamm ridge

A wall of limestone teeth running for ten kilometres along the western side of the valley, with the Bischofsmütze at the far end — the hardest edge in a soft landscape.

Best time: The last half hour of light on the rock, or a morning with moving cloud on the towers

You do not have to climb to use the ridge: the lake shore and the Zwieselalm both hold it in frame. Anything on the paths beneath the towers is alpine terrain — proper footwear and a weather check first.

The trail to the Hinterer Gosausee

A gravel track past the Gosaulacke to the last lake in the valley, an hour and a half in — greener, emptier and directly under the Dachstein glacier.

Best time: Middle of the day in summer, when the upper valley finally gets its light; walk in early to have it empty

Allow three hours there and back to the Hinterer Gosausee and take water — there is no service beyond the first lake. In winter this is a ski and snowshoe route rather than a walk, so check conditions before setting out.

The Zwieselalm meadows and the Gosaukammbahn

A cable car lifts to open alpine pasture at about 1,475 metres on the far side of the valley, and from up there the whole Gosaukamm stands in profile.

Best time: Afternoon and the last hour of light, with the Gosaukamm lit across the valley

The lift closes between the summer and winter seasons, so check the current operating dates before you build a shoot around it. Take a layer — the alm is exposed and usually several degrees colder than the valley.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a photoshoot at the Gosausee cost?

Professional photoshoots at the Gosausee start from €279. Packages vary by duration and the number of edited photos — an hour at the near end of the Vorderer Gosausee, where the reflection is thirty seconds from the car park, or two hours to walk the lake circuit or go on towards the Gosaulacke. Most couples book 60 to 90 minutes here.

What are the best photo spots at the Gosausee?

The northern shore of the Vorderer Gosausee is the frame: the Dachstein, its glacier and the Gosaukamm towers standing twice in still water. The flat circuit path keeps that reflection on one side for an hour. Further in, the Gosaulacke and the Hinterer Gosausee are greener and emptier, and the Zwieselalm above the lake gives the Gosaukamm ridge in profile.

What is the best time of day and season for photos at the Gosausee?

Early morning, before the valley wind starts, is when the reflection holds; by midday the surface usually breaks up. The lake sits in shade until the sun clears the Gosaukamm, so the light arrives late and warm. June brings alpine roses, October turns the larches gold and thins the crowds, and from December the lake lies under snow with the ridge black above it.

How do we get to the Gosausee, and does the cable car run all year?

A public road runs from Gosau village to the car park at the near end of the lake, about eight kilometres, and parking is paid; a bus serves it in season. The Gosaukammbahn to the Zwieselalm runs in summer and again in winter as part of the ski area, with a closed gap between the two. Check the current season, hours and road conditions before setting out.

How long is a typical couples photoshoot in Austria?

Most couples book 60 to 90 minutes, which is enough for two or three spots and a real variety of relaxed frames. In Vienna that might be the Burggarten, the Michaelerplatz arches and a quiet stretch of the Danube Canal; in Hallstatt your photographer will walk you through the village and along the shore before the first coach parties arrive around ten. Two-hour sessions suit anyone who wants to move between a town and the landscape around it — Salzburg's old town plus a lake, say. Book with Photo Austria and we will match you with a photographer who works the way you want to be photographed.

What should we wear for a couples photoshoot?

Coordinate, do not match. Muted solid colours — cream, forest green, rust, deep blue — sit beautifully against Vienna's pale stone, the green of a Tyrolean meadow and the turquoise of an Austrian lake. Skip loud patterns and big logos. Footwear matters more here than in most countries: Hallstatt and Salzburg are all cobbles and steps, and any mountain spot means an uneven path. In winter, dress for real cold and bring the coat you actually like being seen in, because it will be in every frame; add gloves and a hat you can take off for a few shots. Your Photo Austria photographer will send styling notes for your exact location, season and time of day.
