About Gmunden & the Traunsee
Gmunden holds the north end of the Traunsee, the deepest lake in Austria, and the Traunstein rises 1,691 metres straight out of the far shore behind it — the reason every frame here has a mountain in it. The picture the town is known for is the Seeschloss Ort, a white castle on a small island reached by a long wooden footbridge; the bridge itself, seen head-on with the onion-domed tower at the end, is the shot, and it works in flat overcast light as well as in sun. The castle courtyard is open to walk through and the estate sets its own rules for anything that looks like a production, so check before the day. In the town, the Rathausplatz sits right on the water: a painted square, arcades, and a town hall whose carillon is made of Gmunden ceramic — the local craft, still produced in the green-striped pattern you will see in every shop window. From the square the Esplanade runs south along the shore past the Toscanapark to the Ort peninsula, twenty minutes of lakeside walking with the Traunstein in the background the whole way. The Grünberg cable car climbs the eastern side for the view down over the whole lake. Five kilometres south, Traunkirchen sits on a promontory: the parish church with its famous fisherman's pulpit, and above it the Johannesberg chapel on a rock spur, one of the most photographed silhouettes on the lake. Summer means paddle steamers, warm evenings and the boat season; winter often puts the Traunstein in snow above an unfrozen lake and empties the promenade completely.

Top Photo Spots in Gmunden
The most photogenic locations for your Gmunden & the Traunsee photoshoot
Schloss Ort and its wooden bridge
A white castle on a small island in the Traunsee, reached by a long wooden footbridge — shot head-on with the onion-domed tower at the end, it is the picture the whole lake is known for.
Best time: Late afternoon with the sun down the length of the bridge; early morning for reflections and an empty crossing
Shoot the bridge head-on from the shore end and step back — the tower needs the full run of boards to work. The castle hosts weddings and events, so check what is open and what is allowed before the day.
The Esplanade and the Toscanapark
Gmunden's lakeside walk runs south from the town square to a wooded park on the shore, with the Traunstein filling the view behind you the whole way.
Best time: Late afternoon for a lit Traunstein behind a shaded shore; midday under the Toscanapark trees
Use the park when the promenade light is hard, and the promenade when it is soft — they are five minutes apart and never good at the same time. The steamer sits at the pier only in season, roughly May to September.
The Rathausplatz and its ceramic carillon
A painted square opening straight onto the lake, with arcades on three sides and a town hall whose carillon is cast in the green-striped ceramic Gmunden has made for two centuries.
Best time: Mid-afternoon onwards, when the façades go into shade and the pastels hold; early morning for an empty square
Stand with your back to the lake so the arcades and the tower fill the frame. The square is busy on market days and through the December Christmas market, so check the town calendar if you need it empty.
The Johannesberg chapel above Traunkirchen
A tiny chapel on a rock spur over the Traunsee, five kilometres south of Gmunden — the silhouette that closes the lake, with the monastery village below it.
Best time: Late afternoon for the silhouette from the shore road; morning from the chapel itself, when the lake is calm
The spur is small, exposed and slippery when wet — it holds a couple of people, not a group. The parish church below sets its own photography rules and service times, so check them before planning anything inside.
Frequently asked questions
Is the studio rental included in the price?
It depends on the photographer, and their Photo Austria profile states it explicitly — read the package description before booking. Photographers with their own studio include the space in the session price; those who rent third-party space either build the cost in or list it as a separate line so you can choose the tier. When comparing prices, compare whole packages: a session that looks fifty euros cheaper but adds studio rental on top is not cheaper. If a quote is ambiguous, ask directly in the booking chat — is the studio included, and which studio is it — and you will get a concrete answer with photos of the space. The address and access details arrive with your booking confirmation.
How many outfit changes are included?
The limit is time, not a rule. In a 60-minute studio session two to three outfits is the sweet spot: each change costs five minutes plus a lighting adjustment, and more than that eats the actual shooting. For headshots, bring three tops in different tones against the planned backdrop and change only from the waist up, which takes seconds. Portfolio and branding sessions that genuinely need four or more looks should book ninety minutes or two hours; your photographer will say so honestly once you describe the goal. Studio tip: bring everything pressed and on hangers, arrive in the simplest look and start with it — the first fifteen minutes are warm-up frames anyway, and your strongest outfit deserves your warmed-up confidence.
Can we shoot a mix of studio and outdoor in one session?
Yes, and in Austrian cities it is a particularly good deal because the two worlds sit minutes apart. Vienna's studios cluster in the inner districts, so an hour of controlled light can flow straight into thirty minutes among nineteenth-century facades, an arcade or the Danube Canal; in Salzburg a studio is minutes from the old town and the river. The combination suits personal branding perfectly: crisp headshots from the studio half, natural in-context frames from the outdoor half, one consistent editing style across both. Book ninety minutes or two hours for this and mention the split up front, so the studio is reserved for the right window and the outdoor route is planned for the light you will actually have when you step outside.
What are the best photo spots in Gmunden?
The long wooden bridge to Schloss Ort, shot head-on with the onion-domed tower at the end, is the frame the town is known for. The Rathausplatz puts a painted square and the ceramic carillon right on the water, and the Esplanade runs south to the Toscanapark with the Traunstein behind you the whole way. Traunkirchen's Johannesberg chapel closes the lake to the south.
What is the best time of day and season for photos in Gmunden?
The castle bridge faces west, so it takes the low afternoon sun and works well in flat overcast light too. Mornings are calmest on the water and best for reflections. May to September brings the paddle steamer, warm evenings and the flower beds on the Esplanade; October empties the promenade; and winter often puts snow on the Traunstein above a lake that rarely freezes.
Can we photograph at Schloss Ort, and is the bridge always open?
The wooden bridge and the castle courtyard are normally open to walk through and cost nothing, and the outside of the building is what a shoot uses anyway. The castle is a working venue with weddings and events, so parts of it close at short notice, and it sets its own rules on tripods and larger productions. Check what is open and what is allowed before the day.
