Maria Wörth is the picture of the lake: a small headland carrying two churches, with turquoise water on three sides and a cemetery terrace looking straight across. Velden's promenade of plane trees and jetties ends at the white castle, and Pörtschach pushes a wooded, rose-planted peninsula into the water with views both ways. Above the southern shore, the Pyramidenkogel tower holds the whole lake in one look.

Early morning gives the stillest water and the strongest turquoise, before the boats and the afternoon breeze work the surface. Maria Wörth is lit from the south-west, so it is at its best in the last two hours of daylight. July and August are hot, busy and the swimming season; late September and October are the photographer's months — the villas empty, the water stays warm and the colour is at its deepest.

Much of the Wörthersee shore is private garden, hotel ground or fenced lido, so plan around the public stretches: the Velden and Pörtschach promenades, the Maria Wörth headland road and the public bathing areas. In June the sun sets around nine in the evening, so couple portraits belong in that late window rather than straight after the ceremony. And the traditional late programme — the midnight snack, the stealing of the bride, the dancing that keeps going — happens long after many contracts end, so decide in advance whether you want it covered or are at peace with a set finishing time.
