Professional photoshoots in Vienna start from €279. Packages vary by duration and the number of edited photos — a one-hour session in the Schönbrunn gardens or at the Belvedere, or two hours that link a palace with the old town. Most couples book 60 to 90 minutes; adding the Kahlenberg terrace above the vineyards means a drive and needs the two-hour option.

Schönbrunn's parterre and the Gloriette terrace above it are the classic frame, followed by the Belvedere, where the upper palace doubles in its reflecting pool. In the centre, Spittelberg's cobbled lanes, the Michaelerplatz dome and the Ring's Rathaus and Burgtheater give backdrops within a short walk. For the view, the Kahlenberg terrace looks over the Grinzing vineyards to the whole city and the Danube.

The first hour after the Schönbrunn gardens open at 6:30 is the best light of the day and the only time the parterre is empty; the Belvedere pool is stillest at opening too. Late afternoon suits the Kahlenberg and the Ring. For season, May and June bring roses and long evenings, October colours the vineyards, and from mid-November the Christmas markets light Rathausplatz and Schönbrunn — snow, when it comes, usually arrives in January.

The Schönbrunn park and the Belvedere gardens are free to walk and photograph in; only the palace interiors, the Gloriette café terrace and the Belvedere museums are ticketed. Both estates set their own rules on tripods, larger productions and drones, and these change, so check the current conditions before the day. Spittelberg, the Ring and the Kahlenberg terrace are public streets and need nothing.

Every age works, the format just changes. First and second birthdays are cake-smash territory: a short session, morning light, a washable place like a lawn or a lakeshore, and a spare outfit within reach. Three to six shines in adventure formats where the shoot is disguised as a game and the photographer is simply the funny grown-up with a camera. School-age children love being the star of a magazine shoot — give them missions and they deliver poses you could never direct. From about ten, involve them in the planning: a child who picked the location and the outfit cooperates at triple the rate. At any age, schedule around meals and naps, and tell your Photo Austria photographer what your child is currently obsessed with; a knight fan photographs differently at Salzburg's fortress than a boat fanatic does at Zell am See.

Then the photographer stops asking for poses — that is the whole trick. Photographers who specialise in children usually open by not photographing at all: five minutes of showing the camera, letting the child press the shutter, becoming the least threatening adult present. Then the shoot turns into a game whose rules the child controls: hide behind the tree and jump out, race me to that bench, show me your monster face. Shyness reads as delicacy in pictures when nobody forces eye contact — some of the loveliest children's portraits show a child completely absorbed in feeding ducks on a lake or watching a Vienna puppet show. Parents help most by being relaxed themselves. The child who would not pose is usually the one who refuses to leave at the end.
