Professional photoshoots in the Wachau start from €279. Packages vary by duration and the number of edited photos — one hour in Dürnstein between the blue tower and the riverbank, or two hours that climb to the castle ruin or drive to the terraces above Weißenkirchen and Spitz. Most couples book 90 minutes to two hours here, because the valley is thirty kilometres long and the best frames are in different villages.

The dry-stone vineyard terraces above Weißenkirchen and on the Tausendeimerberg at Spitz give vine rows climbing straight from the roofs. Melk Abbey's terrace hangs over the western end of the valley, and the cable ferries at Spitz and Weißenkirchen put you on the water itself.

The terraces face south, so the last two hours of daylight rake across them and separate every row; Dürnstein's tower is lit from the river side in the morning. For season, the first half of April brings apricot blossom to the orchards, June is deep green, and the vintage in the first half of October turns the vines gold and fills the wine taverns. From November to March the terraces are bare and most ferries and taverns are closed.

The villages are spread along thirty kilometres of river, so a session usually starts in one place — Dürnstein or Weißenkirchen — and drives to the next; the north-bank road and the Wachaubahn train link them, and the cable ferries at Spitz–Arnsdorf and Weißenkirchen–St. Lorenz cross to the quieter south bank. The ferries generally run from spring to autumn and stop in high water or ice, so check the season before counting on one.

Every age works, the format just changes. First and second birthdays are cake-smash territory: a short session, morning light, a washable place like a lawn or a lakeshore, and a spare outfit within reach. Three to six shines in adventure formats where the shoot is disguised as a game and the photographer is simply the funny grown-up with a camera. School-age children love being the star of a magazine shoot — give them missions and they deliver poses you could never direct. From about ten, involve them in the planning: a child who picked the location and the outfit cooperates at triple the rate. At any age, schedule around meals and naps, and tell your Photo Austria photographer what your child is currently obsessed with; a knight fan photographs differently at Salzburg's fortress than a boat fanatic does at Zell am See.

Then the photographer stops asking for poses — that is the whole trick. Photographers who specialise in children usually open by not photographing at all: five minutes of showing the camera, letting the child press the shutter, becoming the least threatening adult present. Then the shoot turns into a game whose rules the child controls: hide behind the tree and jump out, race me to that bench, show me your monster face. Shyness reads as delicacy in pictures when nobody forces eye contact — some of the loveliest children's portraits show a child completely absorbed in feeding ducks on a lake or watching a Vienna puppet show. Parents help most by being relaxed themselves. The child who would not pose is usually the one who refuses to leave at the end.
