Get directionsThe Mirabell gardens are the one place in Salzburg where the whole skyline arranges itself for you. Stand at the top of the steps by the Pegasus fountain and the main axis runs through the parterre's beds, past the marble figures and the hedges, straight to the cathedral domes and Hohensalzburg fortress on its rock — the shot the film crews found in 1964 and every visitor has looked for since. The rose hill in the west corner and the dwarf garden beyond it are quieter variations on the same view.
The gardens are free and open from about six in summer and around seven in winter until dusk. Before eight you share them with joggers and gardeners; by ten the tour groups fill the main path, and on Saturdays the palace's marble hall marries couples all day, so wedding parties spill onto the steps from late morning — either a nuisance or a scene, depending on your frame.
The beds are planted from spring: tulips in April, the big summer plantings from May to October, then bare earth and clipped hedges until the next year. The axis faces south towards the fortress, so morning light comes from the side and the afternoon puts the sun behind the rock; a bright overcast day is the easiest for the flowers.
In winter the frame is stone, gravel and hedge, which photographs cleaner than people expect, and snow on the fortress roofs above the empty parterre is the best version of it. Tripod and production rules are the city's own — check them before planning anything larger than a couple and a camera.

Tips
Go before eight for an empty parterre, and avoid Saturday late mornings unless you want wedding parties on the steps. The fortress sits south of the axis, so the flowers are easiest under bright overcast.
