The Fuscher Törl

The Fuscher Törl is a notch in the ridge where the road crosses from one valley system to the other, and the viewing area is built on the saddle itself. The ground drops on both sides, the road can be seen threading below in both directions, and the Hohe Tauern fill the horizon south and west.

On the rocky knoll above the car park stands a small stone chapel built as a memorial to the workers who died constructing the road in the 1930s. It is plain, dark-stoned and set against sky from almost every angle — the strongest single object anywhere on the pass, and a natural place to put a subject.

The saddle is the windiest stop on the road and one of the coldest; even in August it can be near freezing when cloud comes over. That same exposure is what makes it work photographically: nothing blocks the light, and clearing weather here is dramatic in a way that a sheltered viewpoint never is.

The branch road to the Edelweißspitze leaves from here, so the two stops are usually done together. Like everything on the pass, the Fuscher Törl is only reachable while the road is open, roughly May to October, and never in winter — check the season and daily gate hours before planning around it.
